Trolltunga Elopement: A Mountain Wedding in Norway I'll Never Forget

I absolutely love hiking. There’s something about carrying a backpack into the mountains, breathing in the crisp air, and walking for hours surrounded by wild Norwegian nature that makes me feel completely alive.

Still, I’ve always had a habit of choosing the less touristy trails—the hidden paths and quiet viewpoints. Which means I hadn’t actually hiked Trolltunga before.
So when an email from a Dutch couple landed in my inbox—asking if I would photograph their Trolltunga elopement—I didn’t hesitate for a second.

They had been there before. They had stood on that iconic rock formation high above the fjords and mountains of Norway. And now they wanted to return to have their wedding at Trolltunga. How could I possibly say no?

This felt like the perfect combination of everything I love:
A long mountain hike.
Wild Norwegian landscapes.
And documenting two people choosing each other in the most adventurous way possible.
And as if that weren’t enough—they turned out to be the kindest, warmest souls. The kind of couple that makes everything feel easy. Natural. Joyful.

Getting Married at Trolltunga, Norway

Trolltunga is located in the municipality of Odda in Western Norway. Once a year, the municipality sets aside a special day for adventurous couples who want to get married out there—on the famous rock ledge suspended 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet. Couples travel from all over the world for a destination wedding in Norway, choosing this dramatic mountain backdrop for their vows. And honestly—it’s easy to see why. It’s raw. It’s powerful. It’s completely unforgettable.

Anyway: I packed my car and arrived in Odda the night before, managing to get just a few hours of sleep. We got up before sunrise to avoid being last in line—because later that evening I had a four-hour drive ahead of me to make it in time for a full-day wedding the next day.

It’s a long hike. It requires planning, logistics, and a bit of stubborn determination. But it is unbelievably beautiful. And as cliché as it sounds, it truly felt easier in such good company. I filmed and took photos along the way, soaking in the views and the laughter—and didn’t really stop until, several hours later, I found myself almost running back down the mountain to make it to the next wedding on time.

Somewhere along the trail, we even made a new friend—an unexpected assistant of sorts. He was on a business trip from the U.S., had rented a car on a whim, and decided to hike Trolltunga alone. Somehow, our paths crossed. It’s funny how small, unplanned moments like that can make an experience even more memorable. And just like that, we suddenly had a friend in the U.S. who, of course, had to be immortalized in a few photos.

But what an experience. This is one of those days I won’t forget anytime soon. I feel incredibly lucky that my job allows me to embark on adventures like this—and at the same time give people photos they can cherish and look back on with fondness for the rest of their lives.

Sometimes I picture my couples many years from now. Older. With gray hair. Sitting with their grandchildren, telling stories from when they were young, brave, and in love—showing them photographs from the day they stood on Trolltunga and promised each other forever.

I imagine Davy one day, with a little one on his lap, flipping through these images from their extraordinary day.
And that thought—that is what fuels me.
